A Glasgow Win

In Uncategorized on November 13, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Sounds nice doesn’t it? I’m glad to see the party isn’t complacent enough to take the constituency for granted. It was rewarded by a big majority, which we should be able to defend at the next election. So congratulations have to go to Willie Bain and the team.

Can we read much into this resounding victory for Labour? Hand on heart, no we can’t. This constituency hasn’t been contested by a major political party in years. So the waters were untested and the data each political party had, probably negligible.

Glasgow North East is also loyal Labour territory, willing to stick by the party even in the worst of times. Although the SNP talked up their chances I suspect they did so with a heavy heart.

And when a general election comes the picture will change completely. We would have had a few more months to digest the government’s policies and more time to scrutinise the opposition. The electoral picture will be very different and I suspect the polls will tighten over the next few months.

However this was a big morale boosting victory for Labour. It shows us that the electorate hasn’t switched off completely and they are still willing to listen to strong local candidates who has the best interests of the community at heart. Lets take heart in this victory and convert it into some momentum over the coming months.
